Vidíš ten odraz? Ten, ktorý na teba uprene hľadí. Niečo na ňom je podozrivo známe. Možno sa hýbe podobne ako ty, možno ti niečo pripomína. Alebo sa jednoducho stávaš súčasťou jeho existencie. Nie je to halucinácia, len nevyhnutná pravda: divák nikdy nie je len pozorovateľ.

Sólová výstava, ktorú v Galerii Provoz predstaví umelkyňa Keya Singh, predstavuje dva vizuálne diela, ktoré s dávkou humoru reflektujú sociálne aspekty identity, jej prepojenie s digitálnymi médiami, konzumom, postkolonializmom a kultúrnou výmenou. Obe diela nielenže čerpajú inšpiráciu z médií, ktoré nás ovplyvňujú, ale priamo z nich vychádzajú, čím podčiarkujú ich formujúci vplyv na vnímanie sveta.

To akým spôsobom sa na nás určita kultúrna výmena a jej priama podpora sociálneho zdieľania ľudskej skúsenosti podpisuje, Keya autenticky stotožňuje vo video inštalácii s názvom that’s you in the spotlight. Toto dielo vťahuje diváka do digitálneho sveta karaoke, kde sa stáva priamou súčasťou videa pomocou live prenosu. Na ceste nostalgiou vás prevedie alternatívna hinduistická figúra stelesňujúca guru či divu, ktorá virtuálne podporuje diváctvo počas performatívneho odviazania sa. R.E.M. a ich Losing My Religion spolu s religióznou podporou vám určite pomôže nájsť, alebo definitívne stratiť vieru.

Druhá video inštalácia s názvom Denle Chayote sa ponára do komplexnosti identity, kultúry a ľudského prepojenia, pričom priamo odkazuje na naratívny formát televíznych, či Youtubových show. Keya sa v tomto diele transformuje pomocou personifikovanej postavy chayote (čajot = mexická tekvica) a skúma témy postkolonializmu a kultúrnej výmeny, ktoré čerpá zo svojho pobytu v Oaxaca, Mexico.

Rozhodnutie vystavovania práve týchto dvoch diel, ktoré priamo odkazujú na názov výstavy hey, look what’s staring back at you (ktorý je inšpirovaný pesničkou Shit Mirror od Nine Inch Nails), priamo konfrontuje diváka s pohľadom, kedy divák sám sleduje seba, alebo sleduje postavu, ktorá nejasne stotožňuje ideu, či artefakt kultúrnych totožností. Určitá polarita, alebo pomyselné hľadenie diel samotných oproti sebe, má ešte podporovať celú ideu určitého státia proti sebe, nie však v opozícií.

Do you see that reflection? The one staring back at you. Something about it is suspiciously familiar. Maybe it moves like you, maybe it reminds you of something. Or you simply become part of its existence. It is not a hallucination, but an inevitable truth: the viewer is never just an observer.

The solo exhibition, presented at Provoz Gallery by artist Keya Singh, presents two visual works that reflect, with a dose of humor, the social aspects of identity, its connection with digital media, consumerism, postcolonialism and cultural exchange. Both works not only draw inspiration from the media that influence us, but they emerge directly from them, underlining their formative influence on the perception of the world.

Keya authentically identifies with the way in which a certain cultural exchange and its direct support for the social sharing of human experience leave their mark on us in a video installation called that's you in the spotlight. This work draws the viewer into the digital world of karaoke, where they become a direct part of the video through live transmission. On the journey through nostalgia, an alternative Hindu figure embodying a guru or diva will guide you, virtually supporting the audience during the performative detachment. REM and their Losing My Religion, together with religious support, will definitely help you find, or definitively lose, your faith.

The second video installation, Denle Chayote, delves into the complexities of identity, culture, and human connection, directly referencing the narrative format of television and YouTube shows. In this work, Keya transforms herself through the personification of the chayote (chayote = Mexican squash) and explores themes of postcolonialism and cultural exchange, drawn from her time in Oaxaca, Mexico.

The decision to exhibit these two works, which directly refer to the exhibition title hey, look what's staring back at you (which is inspired by the song Shit Mirror by Nine Inch Nails), directly confronts the viewer with a gaze where the viewer is watching themselves, or watching a figure that vaguely identifies with an idea or artifact of cultural identities. A certain polarity, or the imaginary viewing of the works themselves against each other, is also intended to support the whole idea of a certain standing against each other, but not in opposition.
